What is WIC?

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special supplemental nutrition program which provides services to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to their 5th birthday based on nutritional risk and income eligibility. For more information, visit the WIC section of the Department of Health and Senior Services' website.

What Does WIC Offer?

WIC’s goal is to help keep pregnant and breastfeeding women, new moms, and kids under age 5 healthy. To do this, WIC provides:

  • Personalized nutrition and breastfeeding information, consultations and support.

  • Breast pumps to women returning to work or school or if baby is unable to breastfeed due to prematurity or illness.

  • Nutritional food packages for families that meet eligibility guidelines, which can be redeemed with their eWIC card.

  • Tips for eating well to improve health.

  • Referrals for medical and dental care, health insurance, child care, housing assistance, and other services that can benefit the entire family.

  • Offers immunization screening and referral.

Who is WIC For?

WIC is a free program that provides healthy foods and nutrition and health information to Missouri families who qualify. WIC is for all kinds of families: married and single parents, working or not working. If you are a father, mother, grandparent, foster parent or other legal guardian of a child under 5, you can apply for WIC for your child.

You can participate in WIC if you:

  • Live in Missouri

  • Have a nutritional need (WIC staff can help you determine this)

  • Are a child under 5, a new mom, or a pregnant or breastfeeding woman

  • Have a family income that meet WIC guidelines

  • The WIC PreScreening Tool can help determine eligibility

Can Men Participate in WIC?

WIC welcomes men! WIC recognizes the important role that fathers, grandparents, stepparents, and other guardians play in caring for kids. Fathers and other caregivers of kids under 5 are encouraged to enroll and bring kids to appointments, attend nutrition and health workshops, and use their eWIC card in grocery stores.

How Do I Apply for WIC Services?

At your first WIC appointment, you will need to bring the following information:

  • Proof of current household income: Bring proof of income for everyone in your household. Examples of proof of income include pay stubs from recent check (within 30 days), a letter from an employer or the previous year tax statement. If you currently receive TANF, Food Stamps or Medicaid, you can bring proof of your participation on one of these programs instead of proof of household income.

  • Proof that you live in Missouri: Bring documentation of where you live. Examples include a utility bill, a postmarked piece of mail addressed to you at your address, your lease or a rent receipt from your landlord, a bank statement, bank book or checkbook.

  • Proof of identity: Bring identity for everyone who will be on the WIC program. Examples include a driver's license, birth certificate, Voter Registration card, Medicaid card or a Social Security card. Talk to the WIC clinic if you are having problems bringing any of the above information.
